A and hRoofing

Signs You Need a Roof Repair or Replacement

Curling Shingles

When the edges of shingles curl up and away from the roof, it indicates they are warped and may no longer provide a good seal to keep water out. This is a sign that the shingles are old and may need replacement. Some curled shingles can be resealed.

Bent or Creased Shingles

Shingles can become bent or creased when lifted by the wind. If left unchecked, these shingles may crack or tear off. Depending on the age of your roof, bent shingles can often be repaired without a full replacement.

Hail Damage

Hail can cause dimples in shingles, and a strong enough impact can create holes. Dimples may deteriorate over time and lead to leaks, so it’s advisable to replace hail-damaged shingles.

Blistering

This occurs when gases heat up and cause bubbles in the shingles. Blistering can be a result of manufacturing defects or improper installation and may not always lead to damage. However, blistered shingles should be replaced sooner, as raised blisters tend to experience increased weathering.

Craze Cracks

These are surface cracks that occur when the shingle mat dries out and shrinks. While normal wear and tear may cause craze cracks, shingles do not need replacement unless the cracks extend through the shingle mat.

Cupping

Cupping occurs when the edges of shingles curl downwards. Such shingles are typically very brittle, and it’s best to avoid walking on them. Cupping is a clear indication that your home may need re-roofing.

Flaking

This happens when the asphalt layer and granules of the shingles dry out and flake off, signifying severe aging. If you notice flaking, it’s crucial to re-roof your home urgently.

Mold, Moss, or Lichen

These can damage shingles, so they should be gently cleaned off as they accumulate. Avoid using a pressure washer, as it can harm the shingles and dislodge granules.

Sagging or Bowing

If your roof appears saggy or bowed, it may indicate significant issues with the roof trusses, decking, or other support systems. An inspection is recommended to identify and address the problem.

Granule Loss

Over time, shingles can lose granules, leading to bald patches. While some granule loss is normal, excessive loss can be caused by tree limbs, hail, or severe weather. If only a few shingles show granule loss, they can be replaced. However, if the entire roof looks bald, a new roof is necessary.
